Introduction |
| Oil and Gas technology grows rapidly, along with the need
of a safety and healthy environment. Oil and Gas industry involves many
disciplines and complex infrastructure. Likewise other industries, oil and
gas industry employs some technical standards / codes for itself and for
its supporting facilities. Although oil and gas is an old industry, many
codes involved are something new, especially the codes that deal with
safety, health, and environmental impact issues. |

| In Indonesia, oil and gas regulations are established by
Directorate General Oil and Gas (MIGAS). The implementation of those
regulations is under surveillance of MIGAS itself as government's
representative. The correct application of the codes, which is one of the
important points of the regulation itself, is able to increase the
installation's lifetime and give extra attention to important issues
concerning the safety, health and environment. |

| The codes being
used for years in this field of work, which also internationally well
recognized, are the standards of American Petroleum Institute (API), Engineering
Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA, European Standard) for
tank and piping inspection, National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE
International), Steel Structure Painting Council (SSPC), and International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) for coating inspection, and
ASTM,ASNT, etc, as a complement to the other standards. |

The cost for construction and maintenance of oil and gas
installation is the main determining factor in operation supporting
system. Failure in applying appropriate technology and failure in
performing a good maintenance will result in a high cost. The involvement
of an Authorized Inspector significantly increases the reliability of a
project, with a fully accountable result. |
